These masks manufactured by MSA Safety Works are suitable for helping to screen out large non-toxic particles. If you have concerns other than that, like fine particles, toxic fumes, asbestos fibers, lead dust, spray paint, chemicals, pesticides, or airborne carcinogens, you should look at something else.
This basic style of mask has been around for decades. The filter material does a pretty good job of screening out large particles, like dust, dirt, sawdust, grass cuttings, and pollen, but still allows for relatively easy breathing. The material in this mask is thinner and more flexible than some heavier duty masks, which means that they are more prone to getting deformed, and may not last as long. The shade of green of the pictured mask is pretty accurate.
To maximize effectiveness, the mask should be properly adjusted to fit to the face, to get a nice seal. The metal strip at the nose can be shaped so the mask can seat tighter against the nose. The elastic band provides sufficient tension to get a tight, but comfortable fit for most people, but if you have a lot of hair, or a beard, you may need to make adjustments to try and get a better seal.
Used where it is intended, this mask along with suitable eye protection, would probably be effective in situations where there are larger, non-toxic, airborne particles. If you think you will use fifty masks, the unit cost is pretty reasonable. Get them from Amazon for free shipping.
